Sugar in resin, 20cm x 30cm
The flower is a symbol of beauty and delicacy as old as decorative art. We value flowers exactly because they are impermanent – a fleeting bloom that ornaments nature and brings joy to the beholder. In this piece, MIA crafted 49 sugar orchids – a flower intimately connected with celebration and the New Year in Hong Kong. With the pandemic slowly retreating from our lives, this is an ideal time to celebrate a new beginning and blooming of this magnificent city after a harsh winter. The work arranges various colours and patterns of orchid around a central Bauhinia to symbolise hope and prosperity for Hong Kong’s future. By preserving these sculptures in resin, thereby creating eternal beauty, this piece is ultimately an ode to the strength and resilience of the people of Hong Kong.
